The science

Research shows prolonged, unmanaged stress can have long-term effects on individuals including greater risk for heart disease, increased blood pressure, and immune system suppression. Without healthy coping strategies for stressful situations, the likelihood of adopting poor lifestyle habits such as smoking, medication nonadherence, and physical inactivity also may increase, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. However, a growing body of evidence, including 2020 and 2021 studies published in JMIR mHealth, shows programs like Unwinding by Sharecare that leverage meditation and mindfulness techniques can help relieve physiological stress and anxiety.

Meet your guide, Dr. Jud

A psychiatrist and internationally known expert in mindfulness training for addictions, Jud Brewer, MD, PhD (“Dr. Jud”), is a thought leader in the field of habit change and the “science of self-mastery.” Building on his research, he has developed and tested novel mindfulness programs for habit change, including both in-person and app-based treatments for smoking, emotional eating, and anxiety; and serves as Head of Behavioral Health at Sharecare. Dr. Jud also serves as Director of Research and Innovation at the Mindfulness Center and associate professor in Behavioral and Social Sciences and Psychiatry at the Schools of Public Health & Medicine at Brown University, as well as a research affiliate at MIT.
