I was one of Dr. Merikangas' first patients when he was practicing at Yale New Haven Hospital. I suffered from year long periods of genetic clinical depression and acute anxiety and panic 24/7. I had previously been unsuccessfully treated with the most draconian methods and hospitalizations, including ECT. Dr. Merikangas insisted on a very complete medical work-up and the trialed me on different psych meds until we found the right balance. He was very accessible and years ahead of his time. I have been on the same MAO that he prescribed forty something years ago until now and have a good life, a loving marriage and a career as a recreation therapist and teacher. Dr. Merikangas saved my life.
