I had been laboring for a little while when Dr. Mantione strolled in, saying something about how he just wanted to see how I was doing. What he didn’t say was that he detected something concerning on the monitors out front that made him suspect a prolapsed umbilical cord — a pretty rare and scary emergency. He examined me and told me what was happening as calmly as possibly. Within seconds, an entire team surrounded me and was ready to intervene. Dr. Mantione directed my care confidently and gave me clear instructions. He made me feel like I could do this and everything would be OK. And it was. My beautiful baby girl is a year old now. She’s healthy, happy, and smart as a whip. I am so thankful Dr. Mantione was the doctor in the delivery room with us that day.
