In 2019, I had arrived to the University of Iowa with a self-inflicted gunshot under my chin. The bullet exited through my nose. I was left with a mandible that was split in half, and 13 comminuted facial fractures. Incredibly, I healed…exceptionally well. I attribute this to Dr. Mark Fisher and his incredible team. I had a truly remarkable recovery. You cannot tell, now, 5 years later…that anything traumatic has happened. I did spend three months with an external fixator on my face (looked like metal spikes coming out of jaw). I am so lucky. No malingering issues: no chronic pain, misalignment, or nerve damage. I thank my stars for the ability now to live a life without facial deformity; especially the ability to live a normal, functional life after wanting to end it so badly. I am well, physically and (mostly) mentally strong. Thank you Dr. Fisher. I will forever carry gratitude for what you did.
