I suffered with GERD for 27 years. In 2022, I sought further help with my condition at The Oregon Clinic. This led me to the care of Melissa DeSouza, MD. Dr. DeSouza needed me to perform a test with an implant in my throat, while off of my usual medication. She understood that this would be a challenge and that I was fearful of going 10 days without PPIs, though the benefits had been declining. She listened and counseled thoughtfully. She understood my condition and the difficulty it caused for me, and was empathic and comforting, when most doctors distance themselves from their patients' problems. Testing proved that I had a compelling need for surgery. Dr. DeSouza performed a 270 degree toupet fundoplication on me just before Thanksgiving. The outcome has been a night and day difference in my quality of life. The terrible cough I've had every winter is gone. Post-nasal drip is reduced. I can sleep without my bed raised. I am so thankful to Dr. DeSouza and her team.
