How likely are you to recommend Dr. Updike?
Addiction is a serious thing. Opiate addiction is a very serious thing. Now, more than ever, our society needs doctors who are attuned to the needs of those whose lives have been made unmanageable due to the opiate crisis. These aren’t just “junkies” - they are moms, dads, doctors, lawyers, pilots- many of whom were prescribed pain medication by a doctor, they aren’t on the streets robbing for their next fix- although they are no less deserving of a way out - Dr. Updike is the gatekeeper to a new, healthy reality perhaps once thought unimaginable. There is no “secret potion” or “magic pill” that cures this. He doesn’t have magic words or secret knowledge. What he does have is experience, empathy and professional know-how. He understands the addicted mind and the available tools to assist in treating the ailments that come with addiction. His professional guidance wasn’t learned in classroom, it was learned on the front lines. That’s what endears patients to him. He gets it.. and us.
