I saw Dr. Helmholtz for a fluid-filled mass on my hip. There was a concern there might be cancer, and Dr. Helmholtz was going to perform a biopsy. Instead of a biopsy, he drained about 430 milliliters of fluid from the mass. He followed up with me when the lab work was completed, explained things patiently and well, conferred with medical colleagues, and explained my options. He researched antibiotics that are effective against the rare kind of infection in the fluid, again explaining everything to me. Ultimately he referred me to an oncological surgeon. Fortunately, the mass was not cancerous, and I have recovered from surgery. Dr. Helmholz was steady, kind, reassuring, clear, skilled, professional, and willing to revise and develop his ideas based on evidence. I am grateful to him.
