I am a difficult patient, honestly. I’ve had such bad experiences with doctors not seeing me, listening to me, or forcing their opinions onto me in direct contrast to my personal healthcare plan wishes that it has made me apprehensive about trusting doctors. Dr. Behringer-Massera is one of the few whom I not only trust but love. From our first visit, she understood my goal. Unlike many doctors before her, who told me I had to live with diabetes, she knew I wanted to learn how to cure my diabetes, and she was up for the task. She’s straightforward, honest, and action-oriented. With each visit, she listens to me and questions me not only on what I’m doing right but also guides me on what I need to do better. I tend to be an all-or-nothing person, but her excitement at my progress along this journey excites me and, in turn, pushes me to keep going. Though I’m still on the road to recovery, in the time I’ve been seeing her, I’ve brought my A1C down from 13.9 at the time of my diagnosis—a deadly number—to 5.7 as of this week, just 0.1 points away from being below the diabetic threshold. This achievement would not be possible without her support and stewardship. I am forever in her debt.
