My mom has dementia, and it is difficult for her to explain how long she has experienced pain. My mom speaks with confidence so it is not obvious that she has dementia. Dr. Smith recognized the signs of someone experiencing memory loss, and she figured out my mom has a cognitive problem before I entered the ER to inform her. BTW -- My mom's prior two attending physicians did not recognize, nor eventually figure out, that my mom has memory/cognition challenges until I informed them. One of the doctors actually argued with my mom even after I informed him that my mom was diagosed with dementia. Folks with dementia tend to fear new people and become agitated. I immensely appreciated Dr. Smith's ability to connect with my mom. Dr. Smith successfully diagnosed what was causing my mom pain, and she kept my mom calm and affable during the entire examination and tests.
