Patient Reviews
Aug 25, 2023
I’m a 57-year-old male with an advanced cataract in the left eye and minor cataract in the right eye. I searched online for a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist with the appropriate credentials and experience that, in my mind, would provide me with the confidence to move forward with cataract surgery. I found that at Prestera Eye Medical Group, and more specifically, with Dr Tory Prestera who has conducted over 20,000 surgical procedures. On July 20, 2023, I met Dr Prestera and received a comprehensive eye exam and consultation. Dr Prestera wanted a follow-up appointment to ensure that we had the correct readings on my eyes as I was wearing contacts just 24 hours before the consultation. I wore my glasses (I suffer from nearsightedness and presbyopia) for the next ten days and went back to verify eye measurements and finalize preparation for surgery. With surgery scheduled for my left eye on August 7th, I prepared by taking anti-inflammatory eye drops for three days prior to surgery. I arrived at Premiere Surgery Center in Escondido at 9:30 am. When escorted back for surgery-prep, the attending nursing staff applied five rounds of several different drops that numbed and dilated my eye. In addition, an anesthesia professional interviewed me and checked my intravenous line. Soon, eye completely numbed and feeling quite relaxed, I walked back to the surgery room, laid down on the gurney. The nursing staff covered me up (I was wearing shorts, deck shoes, and loose shirt), and taped my head to the gurney to prevent any motion. Dr Prestera began his work and within 12-15 minutes the procedure was completed, and I was back in recovery. The entire procedure was completely pain free and without complication. 30 minutes later I was on my way home with a protective eye patch over my left eye. I had a follow-up appointment with Dr Prestera the next day and when they took the eye patch off, applied eye drops, I could see the clearest 20-20 vision! No eye pain though I did have a slight irritation, like I had an eyelash in my eye, for about three days. The prescribed eye drops helped with that. I was immediately ready for my right eye procedure and was able to schedule that for August 21st, originally in late September but they had a cancellation and I slid right in. What’s interesting is that once my left eye was corrected, I realized quickly how bad my right eye was and the need to correct that as soon as possible. The right eye proceeded just like the left eye. No pain and the procedure lasted less than 15 minutes. As I write this review on August 24th, I am seeing 20-20 in both eyes and as clear as I was at 20 years old! I am completely amazed with the results and am eternally grateful to Dr Prestera and his staff for a successful outcome. No pain, no irritation, and no regrets!!! Additional information for those who find my review helpful: - Prestera Eye Medical Group is a very busy, with numerous clients, office. Delays happen so when scheduling, I recommend adding additional time to your schedule for your appointment. It’s well worth the wait though as my results speak for themselves. They have a strict cell phone policy so ensure you silence your cell phone! - Medical insurance normally provides financial coverage for cataract surgery with clear implants (Intraocular Lens) without corrective/vision enhancement. As such, there is an additional charge for Intraocular Lens that correct for my nearsightedness and greatly improve my presbyopia. These Intraocular Lenses were manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and called Technis Symfony OptiBlue. I had them implanted in both eyes. - I had a small degree of halos around lights when driving at night but not to the level where it impacted my vision at all. The professional staff at Prestera Eye Medical Group are bilingual so if English is not your first language, have no worries as they are able to effectively communicate with you. I hope this comprehensive review provides you with the information you need to make an informed decision when moving forward with cataract surgery. The Prestera Eye Medical Group, in my opinion, is a five-star medical group. They are organized, take the necessary time with the patient (hence potential delays), and provide an invaluable service that has greatly improved my quality of life. I hope they can with you too! Thank you, Dr Prestera! Michael Steinlicht
