Five years ago, my wife, at 77, & in perfect health, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Beth Anne was the only specialist who identified my wife's trouble with speaking loud as having nothing to do with voice but EVERYTHING to do with my wife's slowing cognition. Immediately, Beth Anne, started to work with my wife on COGNITION exercises. Not only did my wife regain her loudness of speaking, but also, maybe more importantly, her cognition GREATLY sharpened. For the next four years, the daily cognition exercises continued along with once every week with Beth Anne. Experts in Alzheimer's said, 'we have NEVER seen someone with Alzheimer's have such great cognition.' With further study on my part, I found that very few slp have had training and experience in the connection between cognition and speech. Additionally, as my wife's ability to swallow lessened, Beth Anne really showed up making weekly visits to our home and teaching the caregivers how help Kay with eating & swallowing.
