When my 15 month old son was diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus, I was told that a VP shunt was his only option. I spoke with two neurosurgeons and was a bit uncomfortable, so I reached out to a friend who is a pediatric neurosurgeon for her guidance. I said I would travel anywhere in the world and asked who the best surgeon was for this condition. She told me to see Dr. Prolo. I consulted with her, and it was completely difference from my other consultations. We had a thorough discussion and agreed upon a treatment plan together. Her understanding and calming personality were instrumental when making this incredibly challenging decision for my son. Ultimately, he underwent an endoscopic third ventriculostomy (which I was told was impossible given his anatomy, and that it would not work per the first two surgeons).
