My previous experiences with physiatrists have been so awful that I waited 7 years before seeing someone again. Needless to say, I was really bad when I finally got in to see her. It was the first time I was actually asked about how I would like to proceed with my care. Instead of just telling me what meds I should take, she told me what she thought and how we could approach working on my mental health. And *I* got to make decisions on my healthcare. It was the first time I actually felt heard. Long story short, I did not get in soon enough (my own delay) though to turn around and I did end up admitting myself to the hospital by her recommendation. I was able to make an emergency appointment with her and told her my plan to end my life. She forced my hand and told me I could admit myself or she could have them come get me. Had she not done this I absolutely would have acted on my plan and would not be here.
