Can syringomyelia go away without treatment?

In very rare instances, a person with syringomyelia may find that their spinal cyst (syrinx) has healed on its own. However, this is generally not the case. If a person with syringomyelia is exhibiting signs and symptoms of the disorder, and if they are in any degree of pain, they require treatment. In such cases, surgery is usually the best option. It is also possible for a person to have syringomyelia without ever developing any symptoms. In these cases, although the disorder has not "gone away" generally all that is medically recommended is monitoring with scheduled neurological exams and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
