Yes, hypothyroidism is a serious chronic illness. It must be treated with medication every day for life. However, symptoms generally respond well to treatment and come under control. If left untreated, hypothyroidism can result in a dangerous complication known as myxedema. This causes the body's functions to slow down to the point of being life threatening. If this occurs, emergency treatment is required.
