How much a speech impairment affects someone's quality of life depends on the severity of the impairment as well as how well a person manages it. Adults who have overcome a childhood speech impairment often don't suffer any sort of impact on their quality of life. Speech impairments can really affect someone's social interactions if they seriously limit a person's ability to communicate, though. Children with severe speech impairments may not development normal communication skills (psychosocial disorder). Adults and children alike may feel shame, embarrassment, frustration, anger, and depression as a result of speech impairments. Speech impairments can be very isolating if you let them be. Though a speech impairment can be challenging, treatment such as speech training can improve communication abilities and therefore your quality of life.
