The shoulder joint is the connection between the bone in the arm and the shoulder blade. There actually is another joint in the shoulder too, called the AC joint, which unites the collarbone and the shoulder blade. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and the tendons that attach these muscles to the arm bone. When these muscles contract, they help you raise and rotate the arm. Rotator cuff issues are a common cause of shoulder pain, sometimes without even an injury or any trauma. True shoulder joint pain is less common. A sports medicine or orthopedic doctor can help figure out where the pain is coming from and how to treat it. You also may be able to prevent pain by being physically fit and building rotator cuff strength with exercises.
