What foods should I avoid if I have an underactive thyroid?

In general, there are no particular foods to avoid if you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). However, if you are taking levothyroxine (Synthroid) for your underactive thyroid, you should avoid foods that may interfere with absorption of the drug from the gastrointestinal tract. These foods include:
  • soy (including soy formula and nutritional products)
  • grapefruit juice
  • espresso coffee
  • cottonseed meal
  • walnuts
  • dietary fiber
