In mid-June you collected a sample to get a snapshot of overall wellbeing in our nation as well as to get
a specific pulse on wellbeing for people identifying as Black and African-American. So what did the survey look like,
and what were those responses being compared against? We wanted to quickly get a pulse on the different
experiences that individuals are having today comparing individuals who identify only as White or Caucasian versus
individuals who identify as Black or African-American. The purpose of really highlighting these two groups
was not to ignore other ethnicities. This analysis was very focused on juxtapositioning those two
groups and really understanding in depth those two groups from the standpoint of our five elements of wellbeing.
What did the studies and your research show? What we found is that those individuals who identify
as Black or African-American are three times more likely to strongly disagree that they like what they do every day.
And in addition, they were three times more likely to strongly disagree that they learn or do something
interesting every day. We know that people who learn or do something interesting every day are probably more likely to then like
what they do. The takeaway for us from that point was one, there is a privilege concept when
it comes to being able to choose an everyday life that lends to what you want to align to.
There was a privilege component of being able to choose to be a homemaker and being able to choose to be retired or in being
able to choose to be a student. The idea of having employment in itself, that privilege manifested as well.
