How Are Varicoceles Treated?
A varicocele is traditionally treated surgery, but John Lipman, MD of the Sharecare Advisory Board says there is a safer way. Watch this video, to learn more about these treatment methods.
Transcript
Traditionally, varicoceles are treated surgically by an incision at the skin above the scrotum and the groin area.
And the visible veins, these dilated veins, are tied off. Our approach is much safer, much less invasive,
that's called varicocele embolization. From the inside, we can negotiate a catheter over a guidewire into this incompetent vein.
And with injection of sclerosant and little tiny coils, block all the dilated veins and tributaries
feeding those veins. Once these veins have been embolized, they can no longer fill, making the system more efficient.
