What are some less invasive reconstruction techniques?
Modern technology allows doctors to use minimally invasive techniques important for harvesting the tissues used in reconstruction surgery. Learn more from Mark Sisco, MD, about reconstruction techniques.

[UPBEAT MUSIC]
The breasts can oftentimes be reconstructed using tissues from the patient's own body. The advent of microsurgical techniques
has allowed us to reconstruct a breast with tissue from the abdomen, the buttock, occasionally, or the inner thigh.
Part of advances in reconstructive breast surgery have included minimally-invasive techniques for harvesting these tissues.
Flaps, as we call them, to reconstruct the breast, for example, can be taken from the abdomen while attempting
to retain as much strength in the abdominal wall as possible.
These more specialized flaps, called DIEP or Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator flaps, also Superficial Inferior
Epigastric Artery or SIEA flaps, can be taken from the abdomen without creating a significant amount of weakness
or bulging in the abdomen. [UPBEAT MUSIC] [AUDIO LOGO]
