Does stress cause IBD? We often get this question as a lot of my patients talk about their symptoms getting worse in times of stress.
While we certainly know that stress can worsen someone's GI symptoms in terms of giving them more diarrhea or abdominal pain, for instance.
We don't think that this impacts IBD much however. In times of
stress patients tend to eat worse. They tend to get worse sleep, potentially not feel well for other reasons. And so it's difficult
to distinguish but overall we don't think that stress makes IBD worse, but the symptoms worse.
