What Happens as the Brain Matures?
Brain plasticity drops in adulthood and again in old age. In this Healthmaker video, Frances Jensen, MD, neurology department chair at the University of Pennsylvania explains how to increase the adult brain's capacity to learn.
Transcript
As a brain matures, its plasticity tends to go down and plateau through adult. And then
we know that over our most elderly populations, it clearly drops again.
And clearly, it drops in dementia. But what I was saying about Mike Merzenich and his studies
is that you can actually increase the capacity of the adult brain to learn
by feeding more information to it, causing it to learn, and causing these proteins to increase.
And that will make the brain more capable of learning the next new task, for instance.
